Plug-In to Power Up: What NH Needs to Know About Balcony Solar

Plug-in solar ("balcony solar") is a small, portable solar system that plugs directly into a wall outlet - no rooftop install required. Already popular in Germany, where an estimated 4 million households use it, this affordable technology could open solar ownership to renters, apartment dwellers, and budget-conscious homeowners for the first time.

With Senate Bill 540 (SB540), New Hampshire now has a legal pathway for plug-in solar, but safety questions remain. US homes are wired differently than European ones, and a national safety standard (UL 3700) is still in development. SB540 intentionally holds off on updating building codes until that standard is finalized.
